Researching and choosing women composers to feature on her album
‘Befreit: A Soul Surrendered’ is a thoughtful programme of early C20th Lieder by Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, and their lesser known women contemporaries Johanna Müller-Hermann and Margarete Schweikert. It explores the theme of death, dealing with loss and accepting mortality, and embracing the promise of the afterlife.
In this short video Whately describes the process by which she found and chose the women composers to appear on the disc.
